Battle of the Books

What to Know…

University Schools Battle of the Books competition will be in April. Battles will take place after school and there will be snacks in the library for battlers. First, second, and third place grade level ribbons will be awarded the day of your battle in the library after the last battle of the day is completed.

GENERAL INFORMATION for COACHES

• Team information will be posted in the library prior to Winter Break. Meetings are set up at your convenience.

• Teams need a banner/poster. Be sure there are no author or title words on the banner/poster.

• Practice authors and titles. There are no partial points, participants need to know all authors and complete title and are awarded 5 points for correct title, 3 points for correct author (s).

• Judges may give 1 warning for disruptions or disrespect during battles, If behavior doesn't change, a team may be asked to leave the competition.

• Battle of the books practice questions will be available in the library when we receive them.

• Students need to be memorizing the author/titles off bookmarks and working on assigned reading.

• Practice 30 second discussion for answer, practice only spokesperson talks to the judge during answer time

• Practice strategy—if no one knows an answer, GUESS a title different than its matching author, the team might get points for one of the choices.

• Participants may challenge a judge’s answer, (some questions do have more than one correct title/author) the spokesperson must say "I challenge," before the judge moves onto the next team with their question, the team is then given the book of their answer, and they have 2 minutes to prove their answer was right.

• Each team is given their own question, no teams answer the same question within a battle.
